The words ‘clean’ and ‘clutter’ being used in the same sentence can send shivers down the spine of many unsuspecting homeowners, but it is something that many of us are guilty of. We like to think that items in the clutter are an extension of ourselves, that our souls and personal character are intertwined with the clutter.

It may become exhausting to get past the billions of excuses you can come up with to avoid clearing that clutter, so you may benefit more from a different tactic. Try asking yourself the question: “how do I feel when I live, work or sleep amongst the clutter?

Your answer to this should be the basis of your de-clutter project and everything else a mere speed hump.

  1. Prepare yourself mentally

Take a moment to yourself and breathe. You are doing this for a reason and you must understand the attachment you have to the clutter to get rid of it. Remind yourself that you would not be considering doing this if it was not a problem and be strong!

  1. Start small

Small victories encourage confidence and morale and if you have a lot of clutter, you will need the extra motivation! Maybe target small little problem areas first, and the large monster of clutter may seem a little less intimidating.

  1. Clutter needs a home…

You either need to throw the clutter out or put it away somewhere, there is no in between! If you’re not prepared to throw it away, it must be filed away or placed into storage of some sort. Out of sight, out of mind!

  1. Implement a system for incoming clutter

There is little use doing all of this de-cluttering if it’s going to come back! Put in place systems that will ensure you’re house does not return to the state it was in before. The one paper system is an example, where if any paper comes into the house, it must be looked at and actioned immediately.

  1. Reward Yourself

Relax and appreciate the good job you’ve done by basking in the de-cluttered zone you’ve created. Appreciate it’s organisation and cleanliness and store that feeling forever to ensure you do not return to the clutter zone.
