It is easy to have the perception that one real estate agent is the same as the next, that they’re all just another form of salesman/saleswoman. Of course they are not all the same as this would assume they’re not human (some would swear they are not!) but they, just like you and me, are people with lives, families and their own personalities.
When you are looking for someone to help you buy, sell, or lease your home, you’re investing in a partnership. This partnership can be a determining factor in your outcome and can cost you thousands of dollars or even just make the following months, even years, unpleasant!
So here we’ve tried to categorize some of the different real estate agent types you may encounter and leave it up to you to decide which type of qualities you may seek in an agent when selecting someone to assist you with your home.
The Team Player – As the Real Estate Market evolves in the modern world, you may come across many real estate agents who specialize in a few tasks. This means that they will give you the best service possible in aspects of the job, but will refer you on to other members of the team for other tasks. Some people may enjoy speaking to a specialist in certain fields, but others may not want to be passed around and prefer to only deal with one person.
The Part-Timer – Don’t dismiss the part timer! There are some agents who might only work part time, while also having another job or being a stay at home mother/father. Due to their unique positions they are fantastically efficient and can possess superb time management skills. Unfortunately they may not be reachable at all times.
The Luxury Agent – This type of agent specializes in the luxury market, a very different kettle of fish to your regular residential real estate. This agent is comfortable in the company of wealthy individuals and showing multi million dollar properties, they’re another kind of specialist. If you’re not their usual type of client, they may not be very interested.
The Tech Head – This agent gets excited about the latest apps, gadgets, and technologies the market has to offer. If you’re into innovative ideas and techniques, this type of agent will make sure your home utilizes all aspects of the latest technological advancements, especially online media to market your home. Others may find them overwhelming or confusing, especially if they use a lot of techie jargon when they speak to you.
The ‘Always Sunny’ Person – This type of agent will always be motivated and enthusiastic in every encounter you have with them. Their excitement will be contagious and you will feel your energy levels rise when they’re around. That is unless you’re a more introverted person, then you may feel exhausted by their energy and find that your personalities clash.
The Rookie – This type of person will be new to the business and be looking to make a name for themselves. You may find them to be devoted and grateful for your business. Sometimes though, they may be simply too inexperienced.
The Elder – They are the opposite of ‘The Rookie’. Usually they are very knowledgeable in the local real estate market, and know small details other agents may miss. They may be less skilled with technology, which could cause frustration.
The One-Man/Woman Show – This real estate agent does everything. You can relax in the knowledge that you’ll never be handed off to another team member, but when they get busy they can be hard to get a hold of.
The Classic Salesperson – They are exactly how you would picture a real estate agent to be. Not all people like ‘salespeople’ types, but some quite enjoy being ‘sold’ to. This all comes with personal preference. Because these people seem like they were born for this role, they will generally be very efficient and predictable, but they may also skip over the negatives in a sale, as they prefer to only sell the ‘positives’.
There are plenty more types of Real Estate Agents, but these are just a few to start you off. You also have to remember that much like a DISC* assessment, generally an agent will posses 2 or 3 (or more) of these types within their personalities.
Make sure when you meet with an agent, you read their personas and identify their potential skills and incorporate this into the formula that will add up to the successful sale, purchase or leasing of your home!

The acronym DISC* stands for the four dimensions of behaviour styles, and in real estate terms it stands for the following:
D * Dominance – Person places emphasis on accomplishing results, the bottom line, confidence
I * Influence – Person places emphasis on influencing or persuading others, openness, relationships
S * Steadiness – Person places emphasis on cooperation, sincerity, dependability
C * Conscientiousness – Person places emphasis on quality, accuracy, expertise, and competency
